Barbieri d’Italia

Our country with scissors and razor.

Contemporary Italy can be understood through one of its oldest and most charming professions: the barber. Which is why Roman director Francesco Ranieri Martinotti shot “Barbieri d’Italia”, a docufilm that visits the whole of Italy to discover the myriad facets of a centuries-old tradition that is more vibrant than ever.
Accompanied by accordion music amid an impeccable soundtrack with a mandatory nod to Figaro, opera’s most famous barber, viewers learn everything there is to know about this profession of simple gestures yet profound human relationships. Barbers speak into the mirrors of their shops, reflecting their vast experience honed over the years in the most magical of places: old piazzas or seafronts, they bear witness to a wonderful Italy, real and alive, a world away from stereotypes.
